Challenges to Five Ronald Katz Telephone Patents, among the Reexamination Requests Filed Week of December 19, 2011

Perhaps more than any other inventor, Ronald Katz has been the target of rivals’ requests for reexamination.  This was certainly true this past week, when requests were filed against five Katz telephone system patents (see ex parte Request Nos. (1), (3) to (5) & (10)).  According to Patent Office assignment records, the five patents are owned by General Electric Capital. 

            Vicor requested reexamination of a SynQor power converter patent (see inter partes Request No. (5)).  Synqor has sued a number of companies, including Ericsson, for infringement of that patent. 

And Ford has requested reexamination of a GM patent for a car body structure, specifically a roof panel-side frame construction (see inter partes Request No. (3)). 

The following inter partes requests were filed:

(1)         95/001,857 (electronically filed) – U.S. Patent No. 7,851,188 entitled FERMENTIVE PRODUCTION OF FOUR CARBON ALCOHOLS and owned by Butamax Advanced Biofuels.  Filed December 16, 2011, by Gevo.  The ‘188 patent is currently the subject of a litigation styled Butamax Advanced Biofuels v. Gevo (Case No. 1:11-cv-54 (Del.)).

(3)         95/001,859 (electronically filed) – U.S. Patent No. 7,290,831 entitled VEHICLE WITH LAYERED ROOF BUILD and owned by GM Global Technologies Operation.  Filed December 20, 2011, by Ford Global Technologies. 

(4)         95/001,860 (electronically filed) – U.S. Patent No. 7,161,525 entitled TURBULENCE DISPLAY PRESENTATION and owned by Rockwell Collins.  Filed December 21, 2011, by Honeywell International. 

(5)         95/001,861 (electronically filed) – U.S. Patent No. 8,023,290 entitled HIGH EFFICIENCY POWER CONVERTER and owned by SynQor.  Filed December 21, 2011, by Vicor.  The ‘290 patent is currently the subject of a litigation styled SynQor v. Ericsson (Case No. 2:11-cv-54 (E.D. Tex.)).

(6)         95/001,862 (electronically filed) – U.S. Patent No. 7,485,989 entitled TUNABLE ELECTRICAL TRANSIENT GENERATOR FOR ELECTROMAGNETIC PULSER and owned by L-3 Communications.  Filed December 22, 2011, by Jaxon Engineering & Maintainence.  The ‘989 patent is currently the subject of a litigation styled L-3 Communications v. Jaxon Engineering & Maintenance et al. (Case No. 1-10-cv-2868-MSK-KMT (D. Colo.)).
